Set up Montessori at home

SIX GOLDEN RULES FOR A SUCCESSFUL MONTESSORI SET-UP

1. OBJECTS AT THE CHILD’S HEIGHT

Make sure what is proposed to your child is accessible without the need of your intervention. His mission is to gain independence and all what he will be able to do on his own will help him to accomplish this mission. An open low shelf is usually the most effective way to display the material.

2. EVERYTHING AT ITS PLACE

When setting up the place, your motto should be ”A place for everything and everything at its place”. On top of nurturing his interest for order, this will help your child to smoothly move around the room and be able to return the material to the same place by himself.

3. A TRAY OR BASKET FOR EACH ACTIVITY

Place each activity (and accessories) either in a basket or onto a tray. This will also nurture your child’s sense of order and will encourage him to clean up after playing.

4. PROPOSE THE CORRECT ACTIVITIES

Only propose the activities matching with your child’s interests and challenges of the moment.

New play materials should be introduced separately with your assistance for the first time.

5. ROTATE THE SHELF ACTIVITIES

Rotation of toys and material should be done regularly to boost your child’s interest and give him new challenges. No need to rotate too often or to change all the activities at the same time. Always keep what your child’s favors the most until he starts showing less interest for it.

6. MAKE THE SPACE BEAUTIFUL

Your child’s mind absorbs his environment and displaying beautiful photos, plants and art pieces will enrich his interest for culture and eventually develop his sensibility towards it.
